Here are eight lawn grasses that don’t need mowing as they are low-maintenance turf grasses and synthetic lawns. Installing such a lawn means you get to spend more time enjoying the outdoors than working on it. They are natural-looking grasses that give you a seemingly evergreen lawn that doesn’t need to be mowed! No-mow grasses function well because they develop slowly throughout the mowing season or reach a maximum height where mowing is unnecessary.

Buffalo grass
This drought-resistant, slow-growing, grass could be discovered throughout the North American Plains. When watered infrequently, the grass can reach a height of 4 inches.
Conversely, the grass will grow to be 6 inches tall if given more water. The grass produces a gray-green lawn that can be mowed at the end of the winter to eliminate any brown, dead leaves and promote spring greening.
It has a shorter, broadleaf appearance than most lawns. As previously said, it is renowned for its prolonged growth rate. This is why the majority of people choose it. It is not just that, but it is a fantastic slow-growing grass as well.
Even if they are warm-season grass, they can withstand the cold much better than other warm-season grasses. Furthermore, the grass is considered to be very tolerant of a wide range of conditions and can be established using seed, sod, or plugs.
Mondo Grass
Mondo Grass comes in two varieties, both of which are ideal for no-mowing. Black Mondo and Kyoto Dwarf Grass are the names of these two plants. Since it is a slow-growing grass, Black Mondo Grass can only grow to a maximum height of 6 inches.
It has a dense, purplish-black color look. The Kyoto Dwarf Grass is the best option if you want even shorter grass. It only reaches a height of three to four inches. It’s also drought-tolerant and has a low growth rate, making it ideal for xeriscaping.
The thin, curled, ribbon-like leaves of this grass help to create a dense-looking turf. They are also used as field covers. They also grow small, bell-like flowers on short stems in the summer, are evergreen, and are incredibly hardy.

Centipede grass
Due to its sluggish growth rate, this apple-colored, coarse-textured grass forms thick turf. As a result, it is also known as “lazy man’s lawn.” It can grow to a height of 4 to 6 inches if not mowed regularly.

Paspalum outperforms other turfgrasses in terms of its ability to flourish and expand in areas with heavy sea spray, sodic soils, and a lack of sufficient water irrigation.
Low-Maintenance Turf Grasses
Consider new “miracle” cultivars or blends if you need grass for kids or pets. For example, UC Verde Buffalo Grass produces lush, silky blades that require little or no water once established.
It requires minimal mowing and does not need fertilizer or pesticides. Large (but noninvasive) roots and thin blades are the keys to these grasses’ success. Make sure you have the right fescue blend for your soil type and growing region.
“No Mow Lawn Mix” is ideal for open, sunny swaths where native prairie grasses once thrived, such as the upper Midwest, Northeast, and Pacific Northwest’s colder, medium-rainfall regions. Eco-Lawn thrives in even the most challenging conditions, such as under-spreading trees or in clay.
When you are producing these blends from seed, it costs almost the same as traditional grass seed; for example, No Mow Lawn Mix costs $3.75 to $5.95 per pound, and you will need five pounds per 1,000 square feet or around 2 cents per square foot. Sowing grass from plugs seems to be more costly; you will have to have one or two plugs per square foot, each costing about 50 cents.
Sedge
The growth of sedge lawns has been one of the most exciting breakthroughs in turf concepts in recent years. Sedges resemble traditional turf, but they are more closely related to native grasses. They existed in America before sod-busting growth and agriculture.
They are smart because they do not need anything in the way of mowing, fertilizing, or chemicals. Many of them require less water than traditional turf grasses. Others can survive in wet, humid environments, and many thrive in the shade.
Ornamental grasses
Grass and grass-like species, such as sedges, are included in this category. Low-water, native grasses are the focus of their efforts. Low to medium-height plants can be used to create meadows in large numbers.
In a landscape, tall ones serve as vertical components. Find out which ones are native to your area by contacting your local extension service. Pampas grass, for example, might be native to one place but invasive in another.
Synthetic grass
